I believe that the work that machine operators perform prior to a shift holds the most importance. This is because there are a lot of pre checks that we have to perform to make sure that machines will run optimally. And it is at this time that most of the troubleshooting takes place so that deadlines can be met and there are no delays.

When I was responsible for ensuring accurate machine settings at the embroidery machine department, the supervisor called me and asked me to adjust the settings in a manner that both sides of the motive appear neat and are useable. I followed the manual and did it but the supervisor wanted more neatness. I took it as a challenge and after consistent multiple attempts and detailed study of the manual I finally achieved the correct settings.

Not higher and not lower than the market rate for machine operator jobs, around 15-20$/ hour.

This is the part where you link your skills, experience, education and your personality to the job itself. This is why you need to be familiar with the kob description as well as the company you will be working for.

It is possible that you may not have as much skills, experience and qualifications as the other candidates.

So what will set you apart from the other candidates? Energy and passion will.

Clients are attracted to someone who will show immense and can show that they love what they do. Be sure to portray yourself as motivated, confident and ready to commit to the company.

Companies want to hire people who are passionate about the job. So you need to have a great answer prepared about why you want the position.

First, identify a couple of key factors that you make fit the job description, then state why you like the company. For example:

“I love the customer support because I love the human interaction and the satisfaction that comes from helping people solve problems. I have always been passionate about working in a busy, hands-on environment, so I want to be a part of this job.”

You may be someone who can handle pressure and that’s great. If you cant handle pressure that well, don’t panic. You can say something like:

“I’m sufficiently experienced to appreciate that there is only so much you can reasonably be expected to be capable of and the solution is not to panic but to remain focused on delivering your very best.”

Working in a warehouse environment especially on the run up to christmas can be stressful.

The key to formulating your answer to this question is to seize this as an opportunity to talk about a situation or an occasion where you were under pressure – and you how rose to the challenge. Try to avoid talking about an occasion when you were totally stressed out – but do acknowledge that you understand stress and are able to deal with it appropriately.

If you have never made a mistake on a job, then you do not seem credible. However, the example that you give to the interviewer should be fairly inconsequential and a learned lesson should arise from it.

Mistakes can be anything from wrong packaging on a product or simply not completing jobs within the time frame. This could be from lack of communication, so not always your fault.

To ensure clear and accurate exchange of information with management and colleagues I usually repeat my messages and question directly for clarification without hesitation in case the message received is ambiguous. Effective communication is the key for machine operators because one misunderstood message can result in hundreds of mis-fed or wrongly fed machine commands which are sometimes irreversible or take too much time to cancel.

My name was nominated for transfer in backstitch machine section as supervisor in absence of the section in-charge. Since I had never supervised a team of machine operators and wasn’t very good in backstitch operation either, I resisted the responsibility as much as I could. I was afraid I’ll fail badly at supervision. Despite my reluctance I was assigned the duty and once I got hold of it, I performed it commendably for a period of one month. A company will want to see how much you know about company culture and whether you have an understanding about the company culture. For example, if the company emphasises on integrity with customers then you should mention you would like to be in such a team because you believe in integrity.

If however, you are aware that the company values do not fit your thoughts then be honest. The best policy is to be honest with yourself.

I would determine which machinery is performing top priority work and look at it first.

I do so by initiating and engaging in work related conversations with colleagues in break periods and other free time. I frankly share any problems I am facing related to technique and inquire if others are facing similar issues. Through healthy group discussions all of us find answers to many small problems which otherwise remain un-addressed.

Honestly if you are applying for this position because you have loads of experience, then mention it all.

But if you are switching careers or trying something a little different, then your experience may not look like its matching up. People skills are people skills, and in this type of job then you will be working as part of a team.

Don’t fall into the trap of specifying job titles. Stick to natural progression. If you don’t seem too interested in what lies beyond this job, the interviewer will fear that you wont stick around for long.

A sample answer could be that you are aware that there are several skills required for the job that you need to develop on, but you believe that your own motivation for self improvements, will be developed by the time an opportunity arises. That is why you are determined to learn.

A typical interview question to determine what you are looking for in your next job, would be to ask what challenges you are looking for.

The best way to answer questions about the challenges you are seeking is to discuss how you would like to effectively utilise your skills and experience if you were hired for the position. You can also mention that you are motivated by challenges and have the ability to effectively meet deadlines to handle a challenging job.

Everything that a machine operator does is to make sure that the quality of the end product is up to the mark. So quality is as important as meeting deadlines is. There are three measures that I take here:

☛ Make sure that the machine room is in compliance with all sanitary requirements
☛ Create reports so that the management is aware of daily machine operations
☛ Perform checks and audits to make sure that machinery is running in compliance with set procedures

Mechanical physics has always intrigued me and I used to open up house hold appliances as a hobby to see how the system works. When I am around machines, I remain in awe. I enjoy working them, conducting preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting incase of any malfunction.
