The most delicate negotiation occurs when you have been quietly looking elsewhere and you now have an offer that is higher than what you are currently being paid. There is no better market validation than an offer. If you are using that solely as a stalking horse to get a raise and if I were your boss…well, I would sure have liked you to come to me first to tell me you were unhappy you are your compensation and let me have a try at fixing it. On this tactic, all I can say is every firm is different and every person is different. For some, this is the only way to get your compensation raised.
