How to get an illustrating job?

Answer:

A good part of an illustrator's work is commissioned. An interesting case study is how the Brothers Hildebrandt got the job to illustrate the 1976 Tolkien calendars. Ian Summers of Ballantine Books was the person with the money. When he met with the brothers, he first saw only two garbage bags nearby. When he mentioned that they should come back with a portfolio, one of the brothers emptied a bag and beautiful drawings from "Lord of the Rings" spilled onto the floor. Summers was surprised and impressed and the brothers got the contract.
